On May 19, 2005 Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78 regulations come into effect for all ships. Annex VI contains several regulations aiming for the prevention of Air Pollution from ships.

Regulation 18, in particular, focuses on the quality of the Fuel Oil used by ships. While Fuel Oil quality has been a matter traditionally dealt with between ship owners / ship managers / charterers and the Fuel suppliers, under Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78 it becomes a statutory issue.
