New MARPOL fuel oil regulations Print
On May 19, 2005 Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78 regulations come into effect for all ships. Annex VI contains several regulations aiming for the prevention of Air Pollution from ships.

Regulation 18, in particular, focuses on the quality of the Fuel Oil used by ships. While Fuel Oil quality has been a matter traditionally dealt with between ship owners / ship managers / charterers and the Fuel suppliers, under Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78 it becomes a statutory issue.

As part of Regulation 18, all bunker deliveries, must follow prescribed bunker delivery procedures and must be sampled by acceptable sampling devices, such as a continuous drip sampling flange. A separate representative bunker fuel sample must be properly identified, sealed and retained on board the ships, inside appropriate storage cabinets, for a 12 month period after the fuel's delivery. The requirements for the delivered Fuel Oil quality, resemble to the general requirements contained in ISO 8217.

NAIAS Labs can provide its customers with the required drip sampling flanges. Furthermore the NAIAS Labs Global Maritime Bunkers Analyses Programme has become Annex VI compliant assisting the efforts of maritime companies to comply with the new MARPOL regulations.
